- 7 domains

- N-terminal domain, resides 1-42, is an activation domain (AD1, also termed transcription-activation domain, TAD)

- Activation domain 1 activates transcription factors

- Activation domain 2 (AD2), residues 43-63, is for apoptosis activation

- Proline rich domain, which gives p53 its characteristic molecular mass, residues 80-94, is for apoptosis

- DNA-binding core domain (DBD), residues 100-300, is located centrally

- DNA-binding core domain (DBD) consists of one zinc atom in association with several arginine amin acids

- nuclear localization signaling domain, residues 316-325

- homo-oligomerization domain (OD), residues 307-355

- C-terminal domain, residues 356-393

- C-terminal domain thought to be for downregulation of the DNA-binding core domain (DBD)
